Hear Scripture, beautifully read
Multi-voice narration of the entire Douay-Rheims with optional ambient soundscapes. Plays in the background, downloads for offline, runs on the lock screen and Dynamic Island while you commute.
What audio narration is
The Douay-Rheims read out loud, chapter by chapter, by professional-grade voices with the cadence Scripture deserves — not the breathless tone of a podcast ad and not the flat dispassion of a screen reader. The narrator pauses at colons, holds the long Hebrew names, lets the parables breathe.
Every chapter of all 73 Catholic canon books has a complete audio track. Pick a voice you find easy to listen to, optionally layer an ambient soundscape over it — rain, monastery, sea, candlelit chapel — and let the chapter read itself to you while you walk or drive or sit with your eyes closed.
The audio engine is built like a real music app, not a cheap web player. Background playback works while the app is closed; the Dynamic Island shows the chapter and verse; AirPlay routes to a HomePod or your car; and the offline downloader pulls down whole books at a time so flights and subway rides don’t interrupt you.
How it works
- 1
Pick your voice
Six voice profiles — warm, sober, contemplative — per language. Hear a sample, set a default, change at any time. The voice setting travels across devices via iCloud sync.
- 2
Open a chapter and tap play
The audio launches with the illuminated chapter art on screen. Lock your phone — the controls move to the lock screen and Dynamic Island, exactly like the iOS Music app.
- 3
Read along, or close your eyes
The current verse highlights as it’s read, so you can follow on the page if you want. Or put the phone down. Both are real ways to take in Scripture.
What you can do
Built like a real audio player, not a tab in a sidebar.
Multiple voices
Six TTS-HD voices per language. Warm narrators for Genesis, sober tones for the prophets, contemplative timbres for the Psalms. Switch any time.
Ambient soundscapes
Rain, monastery bells, candlelit chapel, sea waves, fire crackle. Layered behind the narration at adjustable volume — or turned off entirely.
Variable speed
0.75x, 1.0x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2.0x. Pitch-corrected so faster doesn’t turn the narrator into a chipmunk.
Offline downloads
Tap a book to download all its chapters at once. Audio cached at high quality (~200 MB max, automatic eviction after 30 days). Plays in airplane mode.
Background playback
Lock the phone, open another app, drive — the audio keeps going. Lock-screen and Dynamic Island controls update the chapter title and verse as it advances.
Live activity
The Dynamic Island shows the active chapter and verse during playback. Tap to expand controls without unlocking. Tap to dismiss when you’re done.
